Background

KDO is an initiative of Government and non government agencies on the Central Coast. KDO aims to increase the effectiveness of prevention and early intervention support available to families raising young children. This is to be achieved by building the capacity of communities and the human services network to ensure parents and careers are supported to raise healthy and well-adjusted children. KDO on the Central Coast began in 2000 and has continued to grow since then.

Aims and Objectives:

  • Highlight the importance of parenting
  • Emphasise the significance of the early years of a child’s development
  • Promote child-centred services available on the Central Coast
  • Promote the Central Coast as a child friendly community, caring for children
  • Provide a family-focused information day
  • Create an attractive and accessible event for families from all socio-economic backgrounds,
  • Foster awareness of available services among the providers of child and family services regarding each other’s roles and potential benefits to children, i.e. foster interagency links with the community
  • Create a fun affordable event for families and children.

Rationale for KDO:

  • Due to the geographical size, configuration and the demographic characteristics and the diversity of the Central Coast population there is a perceived lack of public awareness of services available to support families
  • Services and organizations are not always working together optimally
  • Commuter community on the Central Coast that simulates single Parent families with increased need for support
  • Fast growing region – higher than average proportion of young children
  • Investment in the Central Coast social capital and the future of our children
